Botanical name:

Aerva lanata
A. scandens is used in some parts of India

Parts used:

Root (or whole plant)

Temperature & Taste:

Cool, dry. Bitter, Pungent

Uses:

1. Clears Damp, Promotes Urine, Clears Stones:

-Strangury, Dysuria, Burning Urine
-Catarrh of the Bladder, Albuminaria
-Gravel and Stones
-Joint pain

2. Clears Heat, Stops Bleeding: (Ayurveda, Unani)

-Vomiting Blood, Hematuria
-bleeding during pregnancy
-Hemorrhoids

3. Clears Heat and Damp:

-excess Bile; Hepatitis
-Headache
-Diarrhea, Dysentery
-Gonorrhea (flowers)
-Malaria
-Skin diseases, Boils, Abscesses

4. Strengthens the Kidneys:

-Diabetes
-Spermatorrhea (leaf decoction)
-Prostatitis
-acute Renal Failure
-given as a tonic during pregnancy

5. Externally:

-paste is applied to boils
-applied to Hemorrhoids
-sore and tearing eyes, apply the juice

Dose:

5–10 grams in Powder; for children with Diarrhea 1–2 grams of root with Rice water.
Of the Decoction: 50–100mls. (15–30 grams of coarse powder to decoct in 200mls.)

Comment:

1. Aerva is an accepted substitute for Bergenia ligulata in Ayurveda.
