Stauntonia, Ye Mu Gua 野木瓜

Stauntonia chinensis
Hooker, W.J., Hooker, J.D., Icones Plantarum [Hooker’s Icones plantarum] (1909)

Botanical name:
Stauntonia chinensis
Chinese sources state that there are several other closely related species that look similar and have similar effects, without giving specific species.

Parts used:
Root, Root-bark, Stem and Leaf

Temperature & Taste:
Warm, dry. Sweet

Uses:
1. Clears Wind, Opens the Channels:

-Neuralgia, Trigeminal Neuralgia
-Rheumatic Arthralgia
-Sciatica

2. Moves the Blood, Relieves Pain:
-Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea
-Trauma, Bruising, Pain from Trauma
-Stomach pain, Gastro-duodenal Ulcers
-regarded as Cardiotonic
-analgesic effect used for postoperative pain and neuralgia, takes 30 minutes to work and lasts 3 hours.

3. Resolves Swellings:
-Swelling of the Testicles
-Abscess
-Tumors

4. Clears Damp, Promotes Urine:
-Edema, Dysuria
-Cystitis

5. Kills Worms: (Fruit)
-fruits are used for Roundworms and Whipworms


Dose:
Taken with wine to move the blood and relieve pain.
Decoction: 9–15 grams (up to 30 grams), or infused in wine.
Beaten and applied topically for external use.

Main Combinations:
1. Pain (postoperative pain, trauma pain, neuralgia, headache):
i. 30 grams is decocted down and taken to reduce pain. Pain is relieved in 15 minutes and analgesic effect lasts up to 4 hours.
ii. Pills are prepared, each pill equal to 30 grams of crude drug. Dose is 1–2 pills up to 4 times daily. It was effective in relieving pain.
iii. Tablets, each containing equivalent of 2.5 grams of drug are prepared. Dose is 4–6 tablets.
iv. Injections have been prepared in China. The dose is 2ml which equals 5 grams of crude drug, given intramuscularly.
