Wu Wei Zi
五味⼦ (Schisandra)

Latin
Panax ginseng
Ophiopogon japonicus
Schisandra chinensis

Amount
9–15 grams
9–12 grams
3–6 grams


Preparation:
Powder; also prepared as a decoction with the doses above

Function:
Tonify Qi, Nourish Yin, Astringes and Stops Sweating

Use:
Fatigue, short of Breath, spontaneous Sweating, dry mouth and tongue, red tongue with a dry coat, weak, then pulse; or rapid and weak
1. Chronic Bronchitis
2. Coronary Heart disease
3. Rheumatic Heart Disease
4. Supraventricular Arrhythmias
5. Cardiac Shock
6. Pulmonary Tuberculosis
7. Heat Stroke


Dose:
3–6 grams two or three times daily

Cautions:
1. Not used for cases with external pathogen (acute Cold or Flu).

Modifications:
1. Unless the Qi is markedly weak, Codonopsis Dang Shen is substituted using 2–3 times the dose of Ginseng.
2. If there is marked Yin de
ficiency or Heat, American or White Ginseng Xi Yang Shen is used.
3. Irritability, Insomnia, Neurasthenia, add Ziziphus Suan Zao Ren and Platycladus Bai Zi Ren.
4. Very weak pulse, risk of Shock, increase the dose of Ginseng.
5. Chronic Heart disease with Yin and Yang de
ficiency, add Astragalus and Licorice.
6. Yin de
ficiency due to Febrile disease, add Scrophularia Xuan Shen and Rehmannia Sheng Di Huang.
7. Chronic Lung diseases with Cough and excess Phlegm, add Bitter Almond (Bitter Apricot) kernel.
