Botanical name:
Geum herbanum, G. urbanum
Other related species used include::
  1. G. rivale (Water Avens, Cure-All, Chocolate root, Radix Caryophyllatae aquatica, Benedicatae sylvestris)
  2. G. montanum (Mountain Avens)
  3. G. elatum (Himalayan Avens).
Wild or Mountain Avens has the same effects, but are stronger.

Parts used:
Root; less commonly the herb

Temperature & Taste:
Warm, dry. Sweet, Pungent, Bitter
binds, strengthens

Classifications:

4c. CARDIAC
Also Discussive, Resolutive, Carminative, Alexipharmic, Vulnerary
Cephalic, Stomatic, Hepatic, Hysteric, Arthritic

Uses:
1. Warms the Spleen, Benefits Qi, Clears Damp:
-Colic, Stitches and pains in the Sides
-Coldness and crudity of the Stomach
-Diarrhea, Ulcerative colitis
-Dries Catarrh
-Comforts the Head and Heart
-Preserves against Epidemic diseases, Plague and Poison

2. Moves the Blood, Clears Stasis:
-Dissolves Congealed Blood: bruising, trauma, internal Wounds (decoct in wine)
-spitting of Blood
-benefits Heart and circulation
-promotes Menstruation; Amenorrhea
-Tumors and Cancer

3. Clears Wind, Resists Poison:
-acute Cough
-intermittent Fever; especially for Obstinate Intermittent Fevers
-preservative against Epidemic and Infectious disease

4. Externally:
-Hernias
-as a wash for Wounds, Bruises, Trauma, putrid Ulcers, Running Sores, Fistulas
-Freckles, Spots and marks of the face (used as a wash)
-the distilled water from the fresh herb was said to remove Moles (The Secrets of Alexis, 1615)
-Frostbite
-Ointment is applied to Cold Pain, Edema, Scrofphula
-Hemorrhoids
-a strong anti-fungal
-repels Moths (dried root put amongst clothes)


DOSE:
1–3 grams of the powder (up to 6 grams);
3–9 grams in decoction;
Of the Jucie of the Root: 2–4 spoonfuls taken with wine

Main Combinations:
1. Diarrhea, combine with Tormentil
2. Colitis, Ulcerative Colitis, with Agrimony
3. Fever, with Sal ammoniac (3 parts Avens, 1 part Sal ammoniac). Dose: half–1 dram. (Pharmacopoeia Militaris, 1818)
4. Intermittent Fever:
i. Avens root (1 oz.), Cinnamon (1 dram), with Syrup of Orange peel form an electuary. Dose: 1 teaspoonful. (Sobernheim, 1840)
ii. Avens root, Willow bark, Rhubarb, Orange peel
5. Callous Ulcers, Fistulas the juice of the root (4 oz.), is mixed with verdigris (2 drams) (Salmon)

Major Formulas:
Wine for Catarrh
Restorative of Nicholas (Pleres Arconticon) (Nicholas)

Cautions:
Regarded as Safe:  ‘It is very safe, you need have no dose prescribed’. (Culpeper)

Main Preparations used:
Distilled Water, Powder, Tincture, Extract

1. Powder of Avens:
i. Avens root, Gum Arabic (half oz. each). Powder. Dose: half dram. (Pharmacopoeia Militaris, 1818)

2. Tincture of Avens:
i. Avens (1 oz.), Rectified Spirit (half pound). Steep,, shaking frequently, strain. Dose: half oz.

3. Extract of Avens:
i. Avens (1 part), Water (8 parts). Macerate 24 hours, boil for 15 minutes, express. Boil the residue with 4 parts of water, strain. Mix the two decoctions, set aside for 24 hours, then evaporate to the proper consistency.
