Anise & Thyme

Annis is Warm and mildly Moist, Pungent and Aromatic, moves the Qi, clears Wind and Phlegm, and has an effect on the Lungs and Spleen.

Thyme is Warm and Dry, Pungent and Bitter, clears Wind and Phlegm, and also effects the Lungs and Spleen.

Together they have two distinct, but equally important spheres of action.

Firstly, they clear Wind and Phlegm from the Lungs, and are therefore useful in spasmodic and congestive Cough, Wheezing, Bronchitis, as well as more chronic lung conditions when appropriate medicines are added.

Secondly, they clear Damp and Melancholy from the Spleen. They aromatically open to cleanse the Spleen from its obstruction. They are typically added to formulas which purge the Spleen of Melancholy, both to relieve and moderate the harshness of the medicines necessary to remove the peccant humor, as well as to aid in their cleansing and support the Spleen Qi.

Key Indications:
  • Cough, Bronchitis, Wheezing from cold phlegm or wind-cold
  • Spleen Damp / Melancholy

Examples:
Stronger Common Decoction, Comp. Syrup of Betony, Syrup of Horehound, Confectio Hamech, Tincture Purging Melancholy, Galens Powder to Make Merry, Powder of Three Peppers, Polycrest Pills, Pills of Lapis Lazuli, Pills to Clarify,
